The IITC Plantar Analgesia Meter uses the Hargreaves Method for paw stimulation when measuring he properties of narcotic and stronger non-narcotic drugs. The IITC Plantar Analgesia Meter can be used on mice, rats and other animals (cats, rabbits). With our exclusive “idle state” guide light and guide mirror on top of the test head (heat source) one is assured that the placement of the heat source is focused exactly on the desired paw of the test subject. The unit comes with animal enclosures to test 12 mice or 6 rats allowing rapid testing of large numbers of animals.
The IITC Plantar Analgesia Meter can be used on 12 mice, 6 rats and other animals (cats, rabbits) unrestrained when testing for narcotic or stronger non-narcotic drugs. Tests are performed on the plantar surface by a focused, radiant heat light source. Experiments are easy to perform, simply slide the test head under test subject and using our exclusive guide light and attached, adjustable, angled mirror on test head align the test head to the test subject and start the test. The light beam is focused to the top of the glass and creates a 4X6mm intense spot on the paw. The IITC Plantar Analgesia Meter uses visible light rather than infrared light as the user can see when the test will start. The infrared light method can leave the user not knowing exactly where/when the test will start, causing false starts and conditioning of animals.
A built-in timer displays reaction time in .01 second increments. Start, stop and reset of tests is done by either the push button on test head, front panel controls or supplied foot switch. Humane cutoff timer is standard which can be preset to cutoff the heat source automatically if the animal has not responded, avoiding tissue damage. Our test head does not emit clicking or whining noises that can cause preconditioning of animals prior to test.
Our exclusive heated glass option eliminates the glass acting as a heat sink. This feature will eliminate modified reaction time of the animals due to the fact that they are placed on cold glass allowing the possibility of delayed response time to the applied heat source. Built-in heating elements in the glass are digitally controlled for consistent temperatures. Temperature readout and adjustment from 30 C – 40 C for the heated is controlled at the base.
Three individual, acrylic animal enclosures are supplied. Each enclosure allows for 2 rats/4 mice allowing testing of up to 6 rats/12mice total. Enclosures have strong magnets on individual lids to prevent animals from possible escape and clear dividers between test subjects.
